How To Sell Part 2 is a part of the series on ‘How To Sell ‘ your products and services to your audience. It was created by Matt Seppanen, owner of Orange Internet Marketing. In this part he talks about salesmanship, stories that sell and the critical headlines.
In Part 1 series of ‘How To Sell ‘ he discussed:
Market research which discusses how on how to position yourself in your market, including who you are and what you do for your business or your market.
He taught how to clearly outline your purchaser. That is looking at their wants and wishes.
He helped develop a Unique Selling Proposition for your business or USP, and for that he gave simple 3-step formula of “we help ___to do ___ better than ___ or so they can ___”.
He also covered the Features and Benefits of your brand. One of the huge things there was that the benefits must always appeal to your prospects’ feelings.
Then eventually he went into Testimonials and how they should be short, to the point and they must always tie into the features and benefits of your brand.
The very Next step or Part 6 overall is all about Salesmanship. In salesmanship, attitude is everything! You have to believe that what you have will make your shopper or your audience life better. Another key that he likes to consider is there’s money out there that belongs to him… He just wants to go and get it. He suggested that if your product is really good, then do all that you can to get your sales message across. In reality you have to have the disposition that if you don't do all you can to sell your product and if you believe the life of your customer won't be improved, then you haven't done your job for that day. Again, with salesmanship, attitude is everything!
On the Step 7, he is talking about Stories That Sell. He discussed how folk have been telling tales since the beginning of time, actually long before the printed word. Therefore folk are conditioned to hearing stories as a means of communication. The first thing you want to remember with your story as you're developing it is that, your story should obviously communicate your credibility to your prospects and to your audience.
Here are some common but very successful story themes that he mentioned which are typically used:
1. Home-town boy makes good
2. Loser learns to win
3. Confused dude gets a clue
4. Outsider sneaks within
5. Regular guy uncovers a remarkable secret
Any of those are eternal story themes that you see if on: Hollywood photographs, television shows or well-liked books. Those are the commonest themes that are shown that works on selling also.
The final step that he covered or the Step 8 of his series on ‘How To Sell ‘ is the Headlines. He discussed that you have about 3 seconds to snatch the attention of your prospect so you need to make your title and the opening sentence count! He announced that all top headlines are around you and all that you need to do is to just simply look around you.
Some of the finest headlines he suggested are in gossip mags like:
1. The National Inquirer
2. Star
3. Cosmopolitan
So the next time you're going to the check out line at your grocery store, pick up a magazine and play a little game with yourself. Try and tailor the headlines to your product.
As you're doing that over the course of time you might want to be certain that you are accruing or building up a “swipe file” of successful headlines. All of the top copy writers and salesman do this and it is an accepted sales practice in the bizz. He suggested not to reuse the headlines exactly. As an alternative take the formats of the top headlines in history and re-work them to your service or product.
