How Large Should My Rates Be?
One of the very first things that a fresh Internet Marketer will ask is how much he or she should charge for the products or services that he or she is offering. This is especially a hot topic amidst writers who are offering content and copy creation services to those who need them. Some freelance writers feel that they should only charge the rates clients want to pay. This is mainly problematic for people who are frequently told that only the barest minimum of rates is acceptable. If you have been curious about just how much you should charge for your services, this is how you figure that out.
First you should create a list of all of your month-to-month expenses. This includes how much you pay per month in rent or toward your mortgage, your utility bills, how much you spend on food, your cell phone bill, credit card payments, etc. Make sure you include the cost of doing entertaining things like going out to dinner once in a while or money for a few frivolous purchases when you go shopping. The amount of these things needs to be multiplied by twelve. This is the sum of money that you need to put in the bank each year. This is not the same thing as the amount of cash that you should make.
To find the amount of cash you need to generate, take the amount of money you need to put in the bank annually and add at least forty percent. This will help you handle your taxes and fees-after all, the money you make online counts as income and you will have to declare it to the IRS and pay taxes on it. This additional forty percent may help cover the taxes for social security, Medicare, etc. The number you see in front of you, expenditures plus forty percent, is what amount you have to earn.
You most likely intend on doing the job at least forty hours a week. This is a good amount to anticipate, but it is important to note that you will only spend probably half of this work time performing duties for your clients. The other half will likely be used up undertaking book keeping, marketing and other administrative stuff. Why can this make any difference? Because it is going to affect just how much that you should plan on charging. Your primary impulse is probably to take the amount of money that you need to earn then divide it by fifty two then take that quantity and divide it by forty (to come up with an hourly rate). Instead, what you want to do is divide the number by the quantity of weeks you think you’ll be working and divide that number by twenty.
Now that you have the amount you should charge on an hourly basis from here what you charge is up to you. How long will it take you to produce a page or a sales page? Take the time it is going to take you to finish a job and multiply it by your hourly fee. This will need to give you the amount that you should charge for your publishing work.
